The Character Set indicator tells you whether the keyboard is in applied programming language (APL) mode or normal mode. When the keyboard is in APL mode, the letters APL appear on the status line. To switch between APL mode and normal mode, use the APL TOGGLE keystroke.
In APL mode, some of the character keys on your keyboard generate special APL characters instead of normal 3270 characters. For information about APL characters and how to use keys to generate them, refer to IBM 3270 Information Display System: 3279 Color Display Station Operator's Guide.
