1.2 Required Hardware and Software

SNAP-IX Version 7 requires SPARC Solaris version 2.7 or later.

1.2.1 Additional Requirements

SNAP-IX also requires additional hardware and software.

X11 and the Motif Administration Program

To use the Motif administration program, you need X11 Release 5 and Motif Version 1.2 or later.

To use the Motif 3270 emulation program, you need X11 Release 4 and Motif Version 1.1 or later.

To run the Motif display on a different computer from the 3270 emulation program, some additional font files must be installed on the computer used for the display. For more information, see Installing Motif Font Files.

Web Administration Program

To use the Web administration program, you need a Web server that supports Java servlets.

After installing SNAP-IX, you need to configure the Web server for use with the SNAP-IX Web administration program. For more information, see Configuring the Web Server.

TCP/IP Run-Time System

When SNAP-IX runs as a client-server system, the computers on the LAN communicate with each other using TCP/IP. The TCP/IP run-time system must be installed before you attempt to install SNAP-IX client-server.

In addition, if you use Enterprise Extender (HPR/IP), SNAP-IX communicates with remote computers over Enterprise Extender links using TCP/IP.

If the TCP/IP network is not operational (either because the TCP/IP network has gone down, or because TCP/IP has not been installed successfully), you see the following error message when you start the SNAP-IX software:

SNA software failed to initialize, reason:

  Failed to start SLIM
 - TCP/IP initialization failed

The error log file (in /opt/sna/sna.err) may give errors that look something like this:

4:12:21 EST 09 Jan 1996 4100-28(1) E (3430da)
Failed to create UDP broadcast socket. Errno = 127.

Refer to your TCP/IP documentation for more information about installing the TCP/IP software.

Adapter Cards

SNAP-IX currently supports the following adapter cards and drivers:

  • Token Ring:

    • SunLink TRI/P 1.1.2 (PCI Adapter)

    • SunLink TRI/S 3.0 and above (SBus adapter)

  • Ethernet: Sun hme, le and qfe drivers (PCI and SBus)

  • SDLC:

    • se_hdlc serial driver (PCI)

    • zsh serial driver (SBus)

    • HSI/S driver (SBus)

    • HSI/P driver (PCI)

  • QLLC: Sun Solstice X.25 product, and adapters supported by that product

  • Channel attachment is also supported using a suitable channel adapter. Contact SNAP-IX support for details.

  • Enterprise Extender (HPR/IP): a LAN adapter configured for use with IP

Check the readme file on the SNAP-IX installation CD for updates, and please contact SNAP-IX support if you want to use an adapter that is not listed.
