The 5250 emulation program provides a macro record and replay facility. A macro is a sequence of keystrokes that is sent to the display application in the current session. This enables you to save and re-use frequently used keystroke sequences. A typical macro might replay your login process; instead of logging in explicitly, you could replay the macro that would send all the keystrokes required for login to the AS/400.
In addition to recording keystrokes, you can also do the following:
Pause and restart the recording of a macro
Insert markers to create more flexible macros that accept user input when they are replayed
Only a user with appropriate permission can record a macro. The macro is then saved in that user's style file (and any user can replay a macro that is in his or her user style file). For more information about using style files, see 5250 Style Files. For more information about the macro record or replay buttons on the toolbar, see Session Window Toolbar. For information about the default key mappings for the macro keystrokes, see Default Mappings.
There are some restrictions when recording macros:
You can only record a macro if your System Administrator has configured permission for you to specify and change your user style file.
You cannot record a macro that has the same name as a macro in the administration style file. (You can record a macro with the same name as a macro that already exists in the user style file, but this will overwrite the original macro.)
You cannot replay a macro while you are in the middle of recording a macro in the same session.
When a macro is waiting for user input, you cannot replay another macro in the same session.
A macro must be less than 10,000 characters long.
If you do not follow these guidelines, an error message will pop up on screen, explaining what you have done wrong.
