Metaswitch Networks Announces Project Clearwater

Software innovator contributes cloud-based IMS core platform to an open source project intended to accelerate telco innovation

SAN FRANCISCO and Enfield, England, May 8, 2013 - Metaswitch Networks today is contributing the initial codebase for Project Clearwater, an open-source IMS core initiative designed for the cloud. The code is available to the worldwide community of industry software developers and systems integrators at http://www.projectclearwater.org.

Project Clearwater provides a foundation for network operators and others building scalable voice and video applications to deliver critical call and session control functions, along with Telephony Application Server (TAS) capabilities, within any virtualized data center. Clearwater’s innovative design offers massive scale and "telco-grade" reliability in private or public cloud environments, together with exceptionally low running costs of around 2 cents per subscriber per year based on Amazon.com’s AWS pricing.

“Traditional paths to IMS have been expensive and exceedingly vendor-centric,” says Martin Taylor, CTO of Metaswitch Networks. “Our aim is to provide operators and developers with the keys to quickly move to highly-scaled VoIP and VoLTE networks and create tomorrow’s most advanced Web-scale communications applications.

“We think that by openly sharing our knowledge, experience and codebase, we can kick-start more industry innovation and accelerate the promise of the new software telco,” Taylor says.

Project Clearwater follows IMS architectural principles and supports all of the standardized interfaces generally expected of an IMS core network. But unlike traditional implementations of IMS, Clearwater was designed from the ground up for the cloud. Metaswitch Networks will continue to drive the evolution of this codebase in line with standard open-source procedures to meet the requirements of today’s most innovative service providers.

Netronome and Metaswitch develop SDN OpenFlow gateways

Santa Clara, CA, April 15, 2013 -
Netronome and Metaswitch disclosed the details of a unique architecture for OpenFlow gateways based on Netronome network flow processing technology and Metaswitch’s SDN-enabled control plane software.

The companies are hosting a demonstration at this week's Open Networking Summit (ONS) in Santa Clara, California, showing OpenFlow for controling network gateways between an MPLS backbone network and two IP networks. Each gateway uses Netronome’s NFP silicon and flexible and scalable SDN OpenFlow forwarding architecture, controlled by Metaswitch's SDN control plane for MPLS-signaled networks.

“We are excited about the partnership with Netronome and opportunity to bring this carrier SDN solution to the Open Networking Summit,” said Andy Randall, senior vice president of networking technologies at Metaswitch Networks. “The NFP provides us with the programmable dataplane that unlocks many differentiating features of our control plane software, which is at the heart of devices deployed in every major global carrier network. Together, we are at the forefront of commercializing OpenFlow-based SDN solutions and look forward to building networks with our complementary technologies.”

Netronome’s NFP‐6xxx, which is powered by 96 packet processing cores and 120 multi‐threaded flow processing cores operating at up to 1.2 GHz, delivers 200 Gbps of packet processing with deep packet inspection, network and security processing, and I/O virtualization for millions of simultaneous flows. The NFP‐6xxx is the industry’s only processor specifically designed for tight coupling with x86 processors.

Huawei Selects Metaswitch for PCE and Unified Control Plane Software

Metaswitch provides key components of Huawei’s IP & OTN Synergy strategy

San Francisco, CA, May 17, 2012 -
Metaswitch today announced an expansion of its ten-year technology relationship with Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, to include licensing of DC-PCE, Metaswitch’s Path Computation Element software.

Metaswitch’s DC-PCE, along with its GMPLS software previously licensed to Huawei, provides the key building blocks for Huawei’s Unified Control Plane, which powers the software for its SingleBackbone network architecture. Huawei’s SingleBackbone solution enables the convergence of IP and optical networks, which dramatically improves network efficiency and reliability while lowering operational costs and provisioning times.

PCE is an industry-standard solution that separates the critical software components of the IP/MPLS control plane from the data forwarding hardware in the network. This separation and virtualization of the control software from the forwarding hardware is a central feature of Software Defined Networking (SDN) architectures.

“The control plane plays an important role in our IP & OTN Synergy strategy,” said Daniel Xiong, vice president of research and development of Huawei’s Transmission Network Product Line. “Our relationship with Metaswitch provides us with access to the latest innovations in this space and we expect DC-PCE to be an important component of carrier networks as they move to SDN-based architectures.”

“Huawei has one of the largest research and development organizations in our industry,” said Clive Partridge, general manager of network technologies at Metaswitch. “We are very pleased to have Huawei’s continued endorsement of Metaswitch software.”

DC-PCE is part of Metaswitch’s control plane software solutions, which include MPLS and IP Routing software. Metaswitch’s fully portable software products are designed for system vendors of carrier equipment. This network technology is pre-integrated with all the leading operating systems and is portable to any hardware environment, enabling network OEMs to roll out control plane solutions in a quick and cost-effective manner.

Metaswitch Demonstrates PCE-Based Software Defined Networking Interoperability

PCE provides an evolutionary approach to SDN, increases flexibility, performance and simplifies operations

MPLS & Ethernet World Congress, Paris, February 7, 2012 -
Metaswitch Network Technologies today announced the immediate availability of its portable PCE software solution with DC-PCE. PCE is an industry standard solution which separates critical software components of the IP/MPLS control plane from the proprietary-based hardware platforms within the network.

"PCE provides network operators with an evolutionary path to Software Defined Networking (SDN). This is a preferred solution for carriers with massive installed base of equipment and legacy services as it provides a non-disruptive, gradual migration to SDN," said Clive Partridge, general manager of Metaswitch's Network Technologies. "We are showcasing a range of PCE functionality including interoperability with a leading routing vendor, which confirms that our PCE-based SDN solutions are ready for production-based carrier environments."

SDN provides operators with many advantages including increased flexibility and performance along with simplified operations. PCE achieves this by migrating path control to a centralized role while leaving the majority of field-hardened networking functions untouched. This approach significantly reduces costs and risk and is less disruptive than alternative SDN approaches.

Metaswitch's PCE solution, DC-PCE, is fully portable software designed for system vendors of carrier equipment and OSS systems. DC-PCE is pre-integrated and backwards compatible with Metaswitch’s widely deployed control plane software, enabling network OEMs to roll out SDN solutions in a quick and cost-effective manner.

Metaswitch Networks Showcases MPLS-TP Solution

Successful demonstration and tests of MPLS-TP signaling, OAM, protection and interworking on display at the MPLS and Ethernet Interoperability event

PARIS (MPLS & Ethernet World Congress), February 8, 2011 -
Metaswitch Networks, a leading provider of communication software solutions, today announced it has successfully completed interoperability tests of its MPLS-TP solutions based on the MPLS-TP standard draft at the MPLS & Ethernet interoperability event at the MPLS & Ethernet World Congress, organized by EANTC (European Advanced Networking Test Center). Metaswitch's MPLS-TP solution consists of portable, fully integrated GMPLS and IP routing control plane software designed for system vendors of networking equipment. Metaswitch successfully demonstrated the following:

MPLS-TP signaling

IP/MPLS – MPLS-TP interworking

MPLS-TP OAM

MPLS-TP 1:1 path protection

All of the features showcased by Metaswitch are essential for delivering on the promise of MPLS-TP, which is to make MPLS a more reliable transport mechanism. MPLS-Transport Profile (TP), which is in the process of standardization, is an extension of the hugely popular MPLS technology, and delivers a client-independent, carrier-grade packet transport plane with all the features that carriers find essential in their existing transport networks, such as sub-50ms recovery and extensive Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM).

Metaswitch enables rapid integration of MPLS-TP support through standards-based extensions to its mature and widely-deployed GMPLS control plane software, including pre-integrated OAM support, High Availability Framework, manual and automated provisioning and sophisticated protection and restoration.

"For over 25 years, we've helped communication equipment manufacturers quickly and cost effectively deploy standards-based control plane technologies," said Clive Partridge, General Manager of Metaswitch's Network Technologies Division. "Industry-wide interoperability is a crucial step in that process, so the successful testing we completed at the EANTC event is a great proof point for the continued deployment of our MPLS-TP solution."

Metaswitch Networks' MPLS-TP solution is being showcased at the MPLS & Ethernet World Congress 2011 in Paris from February 8 through February 11.
